Organize the Garage for a New England Winter

I see so many people fill their garage with clutter, relegating their cars to the driveway. Personally, I do not want to manage groceries and kiddo in the rain and snow! Read on for some tips to get your garage winter ready.

Or take it up a notch like one of my clients and hire me to help. He parked in his two car garage for the first time since purchasing his house 20 years ago!

Relocate out of season items

If you’re fortunate enough to have a shed, basement, or attic, take advantage! If not, do what you can to leverage those hard-to-reach, out of the way, and up-high spaces in your garage.

With winter approaching, let’s face it. Those sprinklers, lawn mowers, and skateboards won’t be getting used. Pack them away until the spring. For my family, that means swapping the snow blower and kiddie jeep in the garage, and moving all the toys out to the toy shed.

Keep things off the ground

Snow is going to come into the garage with your car. That snow will inevitably melt and create giant puddles of water. Avoid a soggy mess by ensuring your belongings are stored up off the floor.

Take stock of your winter essentials

You probably haven’t touched your winter gear in over 6 months. It’s time to dig them out to ensure everything is accounted for and in working order.

  • Gas for the snow blower and generator

  • Complete pairs of gloves and boots for the family

  • In-tact shovels

  • Extra sand, ice melt, and/or cat litter of your choice for those icy mornings

Winterize your car

  • Top off the anti-freeze

  • Consider winter tires

  • Check your battery

  • Put a winter emergency kit in the trunk

As much as you may want to be in denial, the snow is coming. Now is the perfect time to get ahead of it and organize your garage. And there’s no need to do it alone, I’m here to help!
