3 Essential Moving Tips from a Professional Organizer

1. Label boxes properly

Label your box in 9 locations. Yes, you read that correctly, NINE! labels per box. One per upper corner of the box, plus the top.

A label should be visible regardless of how boxes are stacked or carried. This may seem excessive, but I promise it saves so much time, hassle, and headache in the long run.

Write the room where the box is to be placed in the new home. Use abbreviations to make labels clear and quick to write. Use a number system linked to a computer document to list contents, or abbreviate contents directly on the box.

Abbreviation Examples:

  • KTC - kitchen

  • LR - living room

  • DR - dining room

  • BTH 1 - bathroom 1

  • MST - master bedroom

2. Pack a "Go Bag" and essentials

Use suitcases and clear plastic totes for packing moving day essentials. These are bags/containers that will travel with you, in your own car (not the moving truck!). Pack as much of this as you can well in advance of the move. Create a list of items that have to be packed the week/day of so you don't forget anything.

Pack as if you're going on vacation. Everything you need for a couple days and nights, like toiletries, clothing, and phone chargers. Pack enough fresh sheets and towels for each member of the household.

Pack living essentials, like a shower curtain and rings, trash bags, toilet paper, paper towels, and multi-purpose cleaning spray. Include scissors, a box cutter, and a screwdriver for moving day.

3. Plan for valuables and sensitive documents

Don't let your most precious and personal items get lost in the shuffle and chaos of moving. Plan well in advance for items that need to be handled and tracked with special care.

Carefully pack and set aside these items in a designated spot prior to moving day. On moving day, place them into your car, or that of a trusted friend, before any moving crew/helpers arrive. Unload them into the new home in a pre-designated space that is easy to access and safely away from the hustle bustle.
