Digitizing Kid’s Art: Why You Should Hire a Professional

Image examples are based on real client pieces digitized with the Precious Papers service.

The hard truth: If you were going to do it, you probably would have already.

Time

Expect to spend at least 90 minutes digitizing and editing with a scanner, or upwards of 3 hours with a smartphone*. And this is after you have pared down the papers. You will also need to plan around the weather, photographing on a sunny day.

*Assumes 60 pieces per year per child, based on past client numbers.

Quality

Simply put, a smartphone camera doesn’t come close to matching the quality of a scanner or a professional camera. Resolution, color depth, lighting, and plane (angle/rotation) are some of the major factors at play. When DIY’ing, you need to account for things like background, shadows, lighting, and smoothing out paper creases.

Editting

As a professional, I invest in speciality software to edit, enhance, and host digital images. I am able to elevate your digital images beyond a basic DIY. This is especially noticeable with my custom design service. I resize, crop, rotate, remove backgrounds, and more to highlight your child’s art in a custom photo book.

Sure, you could replicate some of the functionality with extra effort or purchasing the software yourself. Just as you can purchase a scanner to bypass the smartphone/camera pitfalls. But do you want to?
